Getting Fit on a Treadmill

Treadmills are popular fitness machines…and with good reason. Treadmills have been around for a very long time and have proved themselves over and over. Getting fit on a treadmill can become a reality for almost anyone who is physically able to walk. Treadmills allow you to exercise in a safe, comfortable environment, and they are quite easy to operate.

No matter what fitness level you’re at, there are treadmill workouts to meet your fitness needs and goals. If you’re just beginning a fitness program, start out walking at an easy pace and walk as long as you comfortably can. As you begin to get fitter, try increasing the intensity level a bit and add a few more minutes to your session.

The majority of today’s treadmills have several preprogrammed workouts from which to choose. The programs typically include weight loss, fat burning, and cardio. Other programs, such as interval training, may also be included. For more training variations, most treadmills also offer several resistance, speed, and incline levels. Getting fit on a treadmill does not need to be accomplished with the same old routine, day after day. Change up your workouts and challenge yourself a little more each time.

There are some great benefits of getting fit on a treadmill. Among those benefits are:

• Convenience – A treadmill allows you the convenience of exercising in a controlled environment, out of the harsh elements. It allows you to exercise any time of day or night without worrying about your personal safety.
• Low-impact exercise – A treadmill has a lot more cushioning than the street. It has the ability to absorb a good amount of the impact to the body caused by walking or running. Less impact means less likelihood of injury to knees, hips, and ankles.
• No special skills or talents required – If you’re in relatively good health and know how to walk, you can use a treadmill to improve your fitness. You don’t have to be able to lift anything heavy. You don’t have to be able to run a marathon or do the splits. All you need to be able to do is get on the machine and start walking.

Before investing in a treadmill, research the different brands and models that are available. Obviously, if you are serious about getting fit on a treadmill, you’ll want to be sure to purchase one that is sturdy, dependable, and suitable for the largest user in your household. Remember that you usually get exactly what you pay for! If it’s a very inexpensive machine, the treadmill is probably very cheaply made. There are, however, some models that are fairly affordable, yet of decent quality. Shopping around is the best way to find the right treadmill for you.

Note: Before beginning any exercise program, especially if it’s been a good while since you exercised regularly, be sure to consult your medical professional.
