Core Stability: Why is it so Important?

People differ in their opinions regarding the type and the choice of the fitness regimen. In fact, fitness regimens need to be highly customized to suit individual requirements. What is good for you may not be good for others! In other words, the specific conditions of an individual determine the type of exercises that he needs to do. Strengthening the core area remains as a priority for some individuals who are suffering from health issues like backaches. Thus, they need to perform core stabilization exercises to address this problem. Again, many people are of the opinion that attaining core stability is the most important part of staying fit and fine. This belief has laid the foundation for Pilates exercises.

What is Core?

Literally, "core" denotes the central or the innermost part of any object. In relation to the human body, core refers to the central part consisting of the spine and its adjacent structures. To be precise, core includes the spine, hip and the abdomen.
Core is a group of musculature, and it is originally termed as the core musculature. It includes the muscles around the waist and the spine.

What is Core Stability?

In simpler terms, core stability is also called trunk stability, and it refers to the body's ability to stabilize itself during movement. Core stability is mainly involved with strengthening the muscles of the core. It includes a vast variety of exercises that are dedicated towards spine health. It play a major role in back injury prevention during regular activities and sports. Apart from this, core stability is very crucial for the maintenance of balance.

Why is Core Stability Important?

A frequently debated topic, the concept of core stability has been a keen area of research since the ancient times. The idea of strengthening the core in order to prevent backache and other back related issues have seen its practical implementation as well.
The core or the central part is the point where all the movements are generated. The core muscles are responsible for supporting proper body posture, maintaining balance and stability, absorbing, generating and transmitting forces throughout the body. Hence, it becomes clearly evident that the center of the body is actually responsible for process, outcome and movement.

Benefits of a Strong Core

As discussed earlier, a strong core is the foundation of a strong performance and better posture. Gaining a strong core will increase power output, stability and efficiency while reducing the risk of back injuries at the same time. Back injuries result in backache which does not subside that easily! And a strong core contributes to the prevention of back injuries.

How Can You Strengthen Core Muscles?

Core stability involves stabilization of the spine during its various movements and functions. In other words, it involves maintaining the neutral, normal curvature of the spine during its movements. The core muscles are one of the deeply seated muscles of the spine. They work more towards holding the spine together during its movements rather than causing any movement itself. Their movement is quite negligible. Therefore, their performance can be enhanced through static exercises that put more emphasis on endurance. The most important aspect related to these exercises is that the respective muscles should be worked in a way without hurting the spinal curvature. Some exercises like Pilates, swiss ball and bosu ball workouts, and tai chi focus on core stability and are efficient ways to strengthen the core muscles.
Any individual at any age and at any point of life can start complaining about backaches. This is the gift of the modern work life. Increased computer use is a leading reason behind backaches these days. If you consider your body as a tree, then taking care of its trunk or the central part of your body will allow you to maintain proper health of the branches of your "Body-Tree"!
