Information on Lifetime Fitness

Overview

Lifetime Fitness is a chain of high-end fitness and recreation centers. The first club opened in 1992, in Brooklyn, Minnesota. The company went public in 2004 and, as of 2010, there are more than 35 Lifetime Fitness locations across the United States. Lifetime Fitness offers a host of amenities including fitness programs, team sports and on-site resort and spa services. The centers also offer family-oriented activities and team sports. Most of the locations offer 24/7 access, which gives members more options in scheduling workouts.

Cost of Membership

The cost of membership varies by location and the company does not openly advertise its rates. At the time of this writing, they were offering several different enrollment specials including no enrollment fee and six free personal training sessions. The company offers both month-to-month and long-term contracts. Locker and towel service are included in the cost of membership and clients can also put money on their Lifetime Fitness account to use for spa amenities, snacks or training sessions.

Facilities and Amenities

Although there may be small differences between locations, the average Lifetime Fitness center is approximately 30,000 square feet and has both an indoor and outdoor pool and two whirlpools. There is also state-of-the-art cardio and weight equipment, free weights and group fitness classes. Some facilities have indoor climbing walls and basketball courts as well as squash and racquetball courts. There are two group fitness areas, and some locations have an additional "Mind and Body" area devoted solely to yoga and Pilates. The locker rooms have hardwood and granite decor and each location also has a LifeCafe and on-site spa.

Group Fitness Programs

Lifetime Fitness offers a full-menu of group fitness classes, including aerobics, water fitness and yoga. All of the fitness programs are included with the membership. While the centers are open 24 hours, the group fitness classes are only offered between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Class schedules vary by location, depending on instructor availability. Lifetime Fitness offers personal training, fitness assessments and one-on-one yoga and Pilates for an additional fee.

Sports and Family Activities

Members have the opportunity to join runner's clubs and basketball leagues. The clubs also offer tennis lessons, swimming clinics and triathlon training, for an additional fee. The family activities include a kids' fitness area, after school programs and family swim lessons. There are also summer camp programs such as rock-climbing camps and special girl-oriented camps.

LifeSpa and Salon and LifeCafe

The LifeSpa and Salon offers a full menu of services including massage, hair care and facials. The LifeCafe offers everything from full meals to healthy snacks and beverages. Some facilities also offer nutrition services, such as one-on-one coaching and healthy-eating seminars. Members can pay cash or charge the services against the LifeFitness account.
